Reflecting on the meaning of Christmas, I’m increasingly convinced that it is a celebration of two fundamental truths: the unconditional love that is given to every human, and the significance of ‘skin in the game’ proving genuine commitment.

At the heart of the Christmas story is the notion of unconditional love, as told in the Biblical narrative of the birth of Jesus Christ. According to the Bible, God’s love for humanity was so profound that He chose to send His only son to the world. John 3:16 tells this clearly: “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

The love is obvious and central to that text. But the other important point in that verse is that it is about action and the way that God puts his own skin (and blood) in the game. In 2023, we live in a world which is too dominated by people who talk, but do not act. The world of slacktivists who say cheap things, but do not take action when it matters.

Talk is cheap, but action is valuable. When God sent His son to Earth, it was the ultimate demonstration of having skin in the game. It wasn’t merely a proclamation of love; it was an act that involved risk, sacrifice, and deep involvement. Prior to the birth (literally) of Christianity, various religious groups spoke of Gods that said various things. But none took the action to live amongst us, and to take on human form in the way that is celebrated at Christmas.

The act of the birth of Jesus signifies both divine intervention and is a testament to the boundless, unwavering love that forms the foundation of the Christmas spirit. It’s a reminder that each person is loved beyond measure, irrespective of their flaws or past.

As we celebrate Christmas, it’s essential to remember these twin pillars of love and commitment. To truly embrace the spirit of Christmas, I think we are called to love unconditionally. We are also called to have skin in the game in our dealings with the world, demonstrating our commitment and sincerity in all we do.

May you remember that you are loved. May you remember that talk is cheap, and action is valuable. May you have a Merry Christmas.
