When it comes to netball equipment, Gilbert has been a household name, with generally high regard for its quality and durability. However, my recent experience with their Gilbert Eclipse Netball has been markedly different, leaving me underwhelmed. I aim to provide an honest review based on my personal use, highlighting the key aspects where the ball fell short of my expectations.
Outdoor Usage Claim
One of the key selling points of the Gilbert Eclipse Netball is that it is supposed to be suitable for outdoor usage. This was a significant factor in my decision to purchase it. However, the reality did not live up to the promise. Despite only occasional outdoor use, predominantly for solo shooting sessions, the ball’s durability was disappointing.
Durability Concerns
The most concerning aspect was the durability of the Eclipse. It started showing signs of wear and tear far sooner than expected. Within just six months of purchase, the ball began to deteriorate with multiple failures of the stitching. This was particularly surprising considering the light and irregular usage it was subjected to.
Pressure Maintenance
I followed Gilbert’s instructions meticulously, maintaining the pressure at 8-10psi. Despite this, the ball’s integrity did not hold up. The issue seemed to begin with a single stitching coming loose. Once this happened, a domino effect ensued, leading to rapid deterioration, as shown in the below photographs.

The bottom line
The Gilbert Eclipse Netball was a letdown. While it promises outdoor durability, it failed to deliver for me, especially for a ball that only endured light usage. I bought it in July, used it a lot through to the middle of August… And then mostly left it in a cupboard until December when I used it for several days in Australia. I had a few sessions here and there in between (especially in September) but it was hardly subjected to much use.
The issue with the stitching is particularly concerning, as it indicates a fundamental flaw in the ball’s construction. Netball players looking for a durable, outdoor-friendly ball might need to consider other options. Gilbert, known for its quality products, seems to have missed the mark with the Eclipse.
The rapid deterioration of a sports ball like the Gilbert Eclipse Netball in such a short timeframe, especially under light usage, raises questions about its manufacturing quality and suitability for outdoor use.
