I found this podcast to be very informative on the underlying economic issues behind higher fuel prices: basically, businesses are not increasing supply because they don’t want to invest a huge chunk of money on building stuff that Western Governments want to phase out in coming years.

In effect, this is the natural consequence of extremist environmentalist plans to constrict the supply of fuel: less fuel is supplied now and in the future, causing higher prices.
