My New Year’s resolutions for 2024:

Multiply community service by empowering others

In 2023 and before, I have spent a big chunk of time in directly serving various parts of my community. Whether it be turning grave stones into life stories by serving the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, or volunteering at Graih, the homeless shelter, a big part of my service is in taking direct, but personal, action.

In 2024, I resolve to expand that by empowering others to better serve their communities. I’ve got some ideas on how to make this happen in a real manner which I look forward to sharing in due course.

Learn to make one excellent sauce

In 2023 and before, I have developed a reasonable capacity to cook some good items at a decent level. In many cases, this is in the form of cooking a big chunk of meat at a low temperature for a very long time.

In 2024, I resolve to improve upon this by learning to cook one excellent sauce. At the moment, I suspect it will be some form of cheese sauce – possibly involving the use of feta cheese as a base – as I think that’ll go well with a bunch of things I enjoy eating (meat; eggs; etc).

Learn to make one excellent cocktail

In 2023 and before, I haven’t ever made much in the way of cocktails in a sustained or repeatable manner. I think that would be fun and would add to my life (and the lives of people that I am connected to).

In 2024, I resolve to fix this by learning to make one decent cocktail. I will try to learn something with a citrus and/or whiskey base (since I enjoy those flavours) or something else. Drink testers apply within!

Adjust my shot for netball

In 2023 and before, I have futzed around with shooting in netball, and have some thoughts about how to adjust my shot with a key goal of improving my accuracy. In particular, I need to adjust my shooting rhythm to be better in more challenging games against stronger defenders.

Host more often

In 2023 and before, I have only sporadically hosted people at my place. I would like to do that more often, especially because I expect that I will not need to fly back and forth to London as much with work. That offers the prospect of travelling less, with the associated reduction in time wasted on planes and in airports.

In 2024, I resolve to host people more often. This might be for micro-stakes poker games, or other similar activities.
