Some simple truths from netball:

  • It is easier to make your shot in netball when you are closer to the basket;
  • Every little bit helps;
  • You are allowed to pivot when taking a penalty shot.

Throughout the 2025 England Men’s and Mixed Netball season, I put these three simple truths together to implement a better way to take penalty shots in netball: line up facing away from the hoop, and immediately pivot on your heel to get closer. This also has the benefit of inviting obstruction from any remaining defender.
