One of the unfortunate aspects of the modern world is that there are a bunch of unpleasant people in the world – online thieves, fraudsters and scammers who may cause you harm. Since I first ran for public office, I’ve noticed a correlation with my accounts being targeted more often by various clowns. To help reduce (but not eliminate) the threat, the Democrats political party in the USA have produced an excellent document here about improving your online security and reducing the risk of “being hacked”.

It is obviously meant as a guide to their local, American, members and supporters, but the vast majority of it is universal.

If you’re reading this article, it is almost certainly worth your time to print this form and then do the stuff that they recommend. I physically go through it on an annual basis to literally complete the checklist and ensure that you do what you can to limit exposure to such online risks.

Michael Josem is a long-term consumer advocate, most prominently as a global leader in combating fraud in the online gambling industry. He was in part the inspiration for the 20th Century Fox Movie, Runner Runner, starring Ben Affleck and Justin Timberlake.

Josem has over a decade of experience as a senior business leader working across various high-tech and online industries, and takes action to build a better community. His primary volunteer roles include service for the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, and Graih, the homelessness charity.
