San Sebastian, known for its stunning coastline and vibrant cultural scene, is also a haven for food enthusiasts. Fortunately, I could visit in early 2020, just before COVID restrictions were implemented.

Whether you’re a fan of pintxos or looking for a gourmet dining experience, this list of recommended places will guide you through some of the city’s best culinary spots.

This is, of course, my list. It is subjective, not objective. Feel free to make your own as you see fit!

Here are some must-visit restaurants and bars in San Sebastian that I think highly of:

1. Ganbara

Located in the heart of the Old Town, Ganbara is renowned for its mouth-watering pintxos and fresh seafood. The warm, rustic ambience complements their delicious offerings such as grilled mushrooms, baby squid, and their famous Basque cheesecake.

2. Borda Berri

A favourite among locals and tourists alike, Borda Berri is a must-visit for its inventive take on traditional Basque cuisine. Known for its melt-in-your-mouth veal cheek and succulent pork ribs, this spot offers a casual yet unforgettable dining experience.

3. La Viña

No trip to San Sebastian is complete without a visit to La Viña, famous for its legendary cheesecake. This traditional tavern also offers a variety of pintxos and local wines, making it a perfect spot to unwind after a day of exploring.

4. Bar Nestor

Bar Nestor is an institution in San Sebastian, known for its simple yet exquisite tomato salad, chuletón (T-bone steak), and tortilla. Be sure to arrive early, as their limited portions sell out quickly.

5. Atari Gastroteka

With a prime location near the San Vicente Church, Atari Gastroteka offers a modern twist on traditional Basque cuisine. Their outdoor seating area is perfect for people-watching while enjoying their delightful pintxos and cocktails.

6. A Fuego Negro

This avant-garde bar is known for its creative and playful pintxos that push the boundaries of traditional Basque flavours. A Fuego Negro’s eclectic menu and vibrant atmosphere make it a standout choice for adventurous foodies.

7. Txepetxa
