Outstanding Pizza Places in Naples

As the spiritual home of modern, post-Colombian pizza*, Naples has a variety of outstanding pizza places.

I first attended each of these on a pizza tour organised by Young and Foodish – Daniel Young runs these tours (not always to the same places) periodically, and you can view them on his website.

Anyway, I’ve personally visited each of these, and found them to be outstanding.

Pizzaria La Notizia

Address: Via Michelangelo da Caravaggio, 53, 80126 Napoli NA, Italy

My favourite pizza in the world. Not the fanciest of surroundings, but legitimately super, extra, double outstanding pizza. If you go one place for pizza in Naples, go here.

50 Kalò

Piazza Sannazaro, 201, 80121 Napoli NA, Italy

The pizza here is so famously soft, you can literally roll it up like a paper scroll. Make sure to get the Pizza Fritte.

Gino e Toto Sorbillo

When I visited here, I had a truly special experience: service at the red table. TV star Gino set us up the front of the place, in his wonderfully theatrical manner, making us feel like TV stars. Never before have I had 200 people sit and watch me eat pizza. I’m not afraid to be the center of attention, but even this was pushing it.

I had a great time, and the pizza was outstanding.

L’Antica Pizzeria da Michele

This is the place from the Julia Roberts movie, Eat, Pray, Love. I’ve never seen the movie, but I ate the pizza – and it was outstanding. Certainly very simple, and certainly very good.

I want to go here – my most trusted pizza advisor, Daniel Young, speaks very highly of the place.

*Prior to Columbus travelling to the Americas, and the subsequent 16th century exploration of the Americas by Europeans, tomato was unknown to Europe. Thus, truly traditional pizza – that is, prior to the importation of tomato from the Aztecs and Americas – is more similar to what we call focaccia today. Bread, oil and salt…
